Mark Leckey, ‘BigBoxStatueAction’ (2003)

Live event at Tate Britain, London. Strapped together and reaching the same proportions as its sculptural counter-part (by Jacob Epstein), Leckey’s speaker stack explores the space in sonic equivalence to the solidity of the form in front of of it. Occasional emissions of largely appropriated sounds address the mass as if to probe and interrogate it in a manner that suggests it is trying to understand it, testing it out. When utilised for performance the sounds hit rib-rumbling low ends at ear-ringing volume.

Pencil and watercolor by Lt. Francis Meynell, “Slave deck of the Albaroz, Prize to the Albatross, 1845”, shows Africans liberated by the British Navy. The Albanez (erroneously identified as Albaroz) was a Brazilian vessel, captured by the Royal Navy ship, Albatross, off the mouth of the Coanza/Cuanza River (in present-day Angola) in 1845. Meynell was mate on the Albatross, captained at the time by Reginald Yorke. According to the NMM records, the Albatross was commissioned in 1842 and cruised African waters until 1849.

From the series ‘Shot at Dawn’, by Chloe Dewe Mathews.

‘Shot at Dawn’ focuses on the sites at which British, French and Belgian troops were executed for cowardice and desertion between 1914 and 1918. The series comprises twenty-three photographs, each depicting a location at which the soldiers were shot. These executions would usually take place in the early morning, before the battle started. All the photographs were taken as close as possible to the precise time at which the executions occurred.
