Bruce Nauman

‘Body Pressure’, a 1974 performance piece by Bruce Nauman.

The performer is instructed (through a poster hung on the wall) to press himself against the wall in various positions. The poster is also a free edition.

The text from this poster is below.

Body Pressure
Press as much of the front surface of
your body (palms in or out, left or right cheek)
against the wall as possible.
Press very hard and concentrate.
Form an image of yourself (suppose you
had just stepped forward) on the
opposite side of the wall pressing
back against the wall very hard.
Press very hard and concentrate on the image pressing very hard.
(the image of pressing very hard)
press your front surface and back surface
toward each other and begin to ignore or
block the thickness of the wall. (remove
the wall)
Think how various parts of your body
press against the wall; which parts
touch and which do not.
Consider the parts of your back which
press against the wall; press hard and
feel how the front and back of your
body press together.
Concentrate on the tension in the muscles,
pain where bones meet, fleshy deformations that occur under pressure; consider
body hair, perspiration, odors (smells).
This may become a very erotic exercise.

Ieke Trinks

Ieke Trinks, ‘Act I’ (2007)

A performance that took place during a party. The performer was dressed somewhat clown-like and was a member of the audience. The performer sat, walked around, made small-talk, observed, drank, attempted to snatch peanuts and smokes. Afterwards a report of the performer’s experience was made. This report, combined with pictures of the particular evening and a discreet male voice-over, were put together into a video.

Rafal Bujnowski

Rafal Bujnowski, ‘Visa’ (2004)

Preparing for a studio stay in New York, Bujnowski painted a photo-realistic self-portrait in black and white, had it photographed and enclosed the picture as his official photo in the U.S.A. visa application form. The consulate workers failed to notice the manipulation and, eventually, the artist received a passport with a replica of his own painting. Using this document Rafal has crossed the U.S. border, the project was supplemented by the fact that the artist has attended a pilot’s course, which featured a training flight over Manhattan – this event was recorded by Bujnowski as a video, part of which is shown below.

‘Verloren und gefunden’ (‘Lost and found’) at Kunstraum Benjamin Richard Leipzig.

The exhibition is described as ‘a fragmented diary through search-posters for lost cats, dogs and other loved ones’. The room was filled with these posters that Christian S. has collected for years and complemented with reports of the correspondance that S. had with the posters’ authors.
