Gregor Schneider

Gregor Schneider, ‘Die Familie Schneider’ (2004)

Die Familie Schneider took place in neighbouring, identical houses – 14 and 16 Walden Street, London. The houses were open by appointment only and visitors – always two at a time – collected the front door keys from a small office on the same street. One visitor entered 14 Walden Street alone, whilst the other entered the neighbouring house.

In each was an identical woman, perpetually washing the same dishes; in each was a child, or a child-like person – wrapped placidly within a plastic bag; and in each was a man in a shower, engaged in a stark and lonely act of masturbation. After a period of ten minutes, the visitors emerged, exchanged keys and entered the second house.

At no time was there ever more than one visitor in each house.

Theaster Gates

‘Twelve Ballads for Huguenot House’ (2012) by Theaster Gates.

Twelve Ballads for Huguenot House references the musical offerings that were filmed within an abandoned Chicago building before it was renovated in Summer 2011. The home’s carefully deconstructed materials (together with its occupants) were then shipped to Kassel, Germany and reused as the raw material for the construction and inhabitation of Huguenot House.

Janek Schaefer

‘Recorded Delivery’, by Janek Schaefer (1995)

A sound activated tape recorder travels overnight through the UK Post Office. The dictaphone automatically edits the 15 hour journey down to a 72min recording, capturing only the significant sounds right up until the parcel is signed for at the end, where it is to be exhibited in a self storage building.

Ryan Gander

Ryan Gander, ‘Locked room scenario’ (2011)

“Lit rooms are locked tight. Barriers are partially in place. Doors leading to dark corridors are amongst the few open – and if you push on through the labyrinth, you eventually find something – although it isn’t exactly what you expected. Uncertainty and issues of accessibility permeate the entire space and experience of it.” (Michelle Schultz for Dailyserving.com)

Jetske de Boer

‘The Free Radical Factory’ (2011) by Jetske de Boer.

A guided tour through the hidden spaces in the building where her studio is located.

Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller

Fragment of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller‘s work at Documenta (13), ‘Alter Bahnhof Video Walk’ (2012)

Viewers are given an ipod and headphones and asked to follow the prerecorded video through the old train station in Kassel. The overlapping realities lead to a strange, perceptive confusion in the viewers brain.

JODI

At coming Saturday’s event ‘I want to believe’, Dutch new media collective JODI will be presenting their performance ‘ZYX’ for the first time in the Netherlands! ‘ZYX’ was developed for one of Rhizome’s events at the New Museum in New York.
The application records users’ quotidian movements and turns them into choreography—one that captures our awkward, mundane, frustrated, addicted interactions with our ubiquitous devices.

Download the app for your iPhone here for free: http://itunes.apple.com/nl/app/zyx/id505193110?mt=8

JODI is participating in the show ‘I want to believe’, which is taking place next Saturday, 19.30hrs at NS16, NS-plein 16 in Tilburg. Do come!
