Piero Golia
‘Postcards from the edge’, by Piero Golia, is a series of custom made woven blankets, picturing landscapes of a mythical journey through America, and the only reminders of his vanishing experience.
On January 14, 2005, Piero Golia vanished in New York. He reappeared three weeks later, on the morning of February 7, at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. Between those two dates, he left absolutely no track of himself, crossing borders illegally, travelling without any trackable means of payment, thus living the adventurous life of a fugitive and referencing Bas Jan Ader’s legendary disappearance in 1975.

It is also in the book, on page twenty-one in this year’s edition. I’ve been retired now from my regular job for about twenty-five years. But still I enjoy doing the parties, and I enjoy having people tell me that they remember me for so long.”

Through the choreography of drawings and bodily movements, Koester traces methods intended to access or express physical sensation beyond cognition. In an ambiguous dark space, a mime performs the exercises described by the infamous anthropologist Carlos Casteneda in his 1998 book Magical Passes. According to Casteneda, these were secret shamanic gestures meant to enhance one’s ability to navigate “the dark sea of awareness”.

‘DeResFX.Kill(KarmaPhysics < Elvis)’ (2004) by Brody Condon
Karma Physics < Elvis is a modification of the bloody science fiction first person shooter computer game Unreal 2003. When plugged into a projector/moniter and power, a small custom pink computer automatically starts and displays the work. The viewer is pulled slowly through an infinite pink fog filled with floating, twitching bodies of Elvis Presley. The convulsions of Elvis are controlled by the original game’s Karma Ragdoll real-time physics system – generally used to simulate the physical dynamics of game character death.
