Remco Torenbosch, ‘EU’ (2011-2014)

An investigation into the history and production of the blue flag of the European Union designed by Arsène Heitz and Paul Lèvy in 1955. The presentation shows a collection of textile fabrics made in the European blue color code by the still existing weaving mills in the European Union. Although the color code for the EU flags is mandated, because of the differing production processes in each country and at each mill, it can still vary, resulting in a wide diversity of blue tints, as seen in this collection.

Cory Arcangel – Arnold Schoenberg, Drei Klavierstücke op. 11–I

Cory Arcangel downloaded clips of cats ‘playing’ pianos on YouTube, and edited these clips using a code he wrote to recreate Arnold Schoenberg’s composition, widely considered the first ‘atonal’ work of music.

Cory Arcangel

Cory Arcangel, excerpt from ‘Colors’ (2006)

The departure point for this work is a 1988 film by Dennis Hopper called Colors about violence between Los Angeles street gangs. Arcangel developed a computer program to scramble Hopper’s cinematic images, transforming them into a dynamic abstraction.

On view at Tate Modern until the 14th of October.

Anne Adams

Anne Adams, ‘Pi’ (1998)

The work portrays the first 1,471 digits (plus the decimal point) of the mathematical ratio pi. With white, black, and component colors of the white light spectrum marking each integer from 0 to 9, Adams tried to capture the randomness of pi’s expansion.
