The school canteen of Cals College in the Dutch town of IJsselstein was connected live, at varying times each day, with the announcement headquarters of Amsterdam Airport, Schiphol. This audio art-work was provoked by the link between noise pollution around Schiphol airport and the Lopik broadcasting mast, which causes IJsselstein particular nuisance.

Electroboutique, ‘AirPort’ (2009)

AirPort is placed in a forest, between trees and bushes. The huge departures display shows flight numbers, departures times, gates, airlines and destinations. All information is displayed in real time. A female voice announces changes in the timetable, last calls and other information that is usually announced at airports.

Nickolaj Recke, ‘Tomorrow is today’ (2006)

The video shows two parallel projections, one from each side of the date line, thus conceptually creating a visual space where you can simultaneously perceive two days; a space that does not exists in physical reality and a space where there are principally no todays, just yesterdays and tomorrows.

A video shot for Portscapes, a series of art projects along the coast of the Maasvlakte, near Rotterdam.

Dijkman shot the video from a boat circling a newly created island. This video was eventually dubbed with audio excerpts from moviescenes where people are entering land from the water.

The following pictures were taken at the Dia:Beacon, one of the Dia Art Foundation’s residencies in the state of New York. They have an impressive collection of iconic pieces of art, and each artist has their own room inside their wonderful building, the former Nabisco box printing facility built in 1929.

Here’s a very incomplete report, because it’s not allowed to take pictures there. These were taken from the hip by Anna.

While inside a darkened room filled with the sound of waves breaking on climbs, dehumidification equipment imperceptibly extracted moisture from unsuspecting visitors. The condensate body water was refilled on used PET water bottles as the ones sold during the art fair. The refilled bottles were exhibited in a showcase next to the sound chamber entrance.

‘Wanted’ (1996)

A fictional room for rent with the same proportions as a standard American jail cell (6 x 9 x 7 feet) was advertised for rent in the Village Voice. Encouraged to “leave some information about yourself,” callers left short descriptions of their hobbies, incomes, interests and so on in whatever way they felt would be most impressive. There were over 117 phone calls in the first 24 hours after the ad ran. The incoming calls were recorded and played back into a room with the same proportions as the advertised space.

During the galvanisation process, metal atoms from a copper sulphate solution are deposited onto the objects by means of electrolysis. Just like during the etching process, four keys have been subject to the chemical process for an increasing period of time.

Ferdinand ‘Postman’ Cheval’s ‘ideal castle’.

Cheval began the building in April 1879. He claimed that he had tripped on a stone and was inspired by its shape. He returned to the same spot the next day and started collecting stones.

For the next 33 years, during his daily mail route, Cheval carried stones from his delivery rounds and at home used them to build his Palais idéal, the Ideal Palace. First he carried the stones in his pockets, then a basket and eventually a wheelbarrow. He often worked at night, by the light of an oil lamp.

Cheval spent the first two decades building the outer walls. The Palace is a mix of different styles with inspirations from the Bible to Hindu mythology. Cheval bound the stones together with lime, mortar and cement.

Just prior to his death, Cheval began to receive some recognition from luminaries like André Breton and Pablo Picasso. His work is commemorated in an essay by Anaïs Nin.

In 1969 André Malraux, the Minister of Culture, declared the Palace as a cultural landmark and had it officially protected. Cheval’s palace is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Cheval may have been the inspiration for the character of Denny in Chuck Palahniuk’s 2001 novel Choke, who gathers a collection of stones which are eventually used, in similar fashion, to build his ‘dream home’.

Cheval also wanted to be buried in his palace. However, since that is illegal in France, he proceeded to spend eight more years building a mausoleum for himself in the cemetery of Hauterives. Cheval died on August 19, 1924, around a year after he had finished building it, and is buried there.

This is a picture of the apple ’species’ that Billy Apple is growing in New Zealand. A spotless, perfectly red apple that’s supposed to hit a grocery store near you sometime in the coming years…

‘Hotel Vue des Alpes’ is a fictional, hotel, accessable only through the internet. Visitors can log in to the website, book a room and walk around to enjoy the scenery. You can stay there for a few days (short stay only)… The view from the rooms is breathtaking!
